Windows 8.1 Update: KB2919355 Error 80073712 Potential Fix

While trying to update Windows 8.1 64bit to the latest update (dubbed 8.1 update 1), I received the 80073712 error when trying to install. A post on this page of the Microsoft community forum by 'MrBill666' worked for me, which involves:

  1. Run CMD as administator (Go to start screen, all apps, search CMD, right-click and select run as administrator)
  2. Enter either of the following depending if you're on 32-bit or 64-bit Windows
    • 32-bit: dism /online /remove-package /packagename:PackageforKB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.3.1.14
    • 64-bit: dism /online /remove-package /packagename:PackageforKB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14
  3. When step 2 has completed, enter: dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
  4. Retry the update!
Hopefully this works for other people out there, I installed this update via the control panel and not manually. Thanks to Michael in the comments for the 32-bit package code.
